What About It

We live five miles north of Boston in Medford pronounced "Meffa." by many locals. I can reach downtown Boston in ten minutes or less depending on traffic and my Bostonian driving, which I have been told gives heart tremors. Living close to Boston grants us the opportunity to take advantage of the historical sites, cultural events and fine dining upon occasion. The fine dining definitely being my favorite! I really enjoy spending time in Boston at night. There is something beautiful and calming about a city at night. Beautiful because of the lights and calming because activity has decreased and most commuters have gone to their homes. Presently, a few of my favorite spots are the harbor walk along the Boston Harbor, Beacon Hill neighborhood and the Charles Street shops.

Boston Harbor

As a child, I never realized the priviledge of growing up here. Our school field trips included The Old North Church, "Old Ironsides", The Bunker Hill Monument, Paul Revere's House, Plymouth Plantation and other rich historical sights. Boston swarms each summer with tourist who come to experience the history at our doorstep.

I, also, never realized the great mission field that lies at our doorstep. Mission field?  People from all nations of the world move to greater Boston to attend one of its 50 plus colleges and universities as well as to take advantage of its excellent medical care and various job opportunities."Athens of America", is what some have coined Boston. Unfortunately, education and intellectual pride have become gods to most and not much thought is given to God the Creator of their being and intellect.

The hard heartedness of the people due to the above mentioned as well as the predominately Catholic roots of the local Irish and Italians has made sharing the Gospel and starting churches a formidable and heartbreaking task. My father used to pull out a 3x5 card with a list of 45 plus pastor friends who have come and left Massachusetts in the 40 years since my parents have been here. He also publishes a list of 33 town and cities surrounding greater Boston that do not have an Independent Baptist Church of like faith. I used to roll my eyes so to speak when he pulled out his lists, but have grown to understand the great need myself. All of this to say, would you pray for hearts to soften towards the Gospel and for Christians to be willing to reach people for Christ in this mission field?
